A sub or secondary meter is installed after your existing(primary) meter E-Meters are not allowed to supply primary meters to consumers.
E-Meters supply secondary meters or sub meters, these meters can be installed in houses being rented out granny flats or even rooms. You can install as many sub meters as you wish.
It is also NOT against the law to install theses sub meters after your existing primary meter.
Example of primary meter
Primary meters are meters that are supplied to consumers from Escom or City power or your local Municipality.
The main use of these meters is to determine the household power usage, or it could even be a prepaid meter.
They also only allow one meter per property.
Please contact your local Municipality if you need a prepaid meter for your house that you live in.
Example of how the sub meter works
The tennant deposits the money for electricity into your account, only once the funds are credited to your bank account the you can generate a token for the meter, the meter 20-digit credit token can be sent via SMS to your tennant.
Once the 20 digit token is entred into the meter via the keypad, the meter will start dispensing electricity untill the credit token value has expired.
The meter will stop dispensing electricity when the KW/H value of the tokens entered is consumed and will not dispense further until such time as another credit token number is entered.
NOTE: Credit tokens can only be used once and cannot be used for any meter other than the one for which it was requested.
